Alaskan Yellow Cedar
Alaskan Yellow Cedar (Cupressus nootkatensis)
Occurrence: Northwest Coast of North America, Other names: Nootka Cypress
The genus of this tree has never been clearly defined. Alaskan Yellow Cedar is probably one of the tree species with the most frequently changed and reclassified botanical name. It was originally placed in the genus Cupressus and later in the genus Chamaecyparis where it remained for approximately 160 years. Recent reclassifications have moved him from Chamaecyparis to the newly formed genus Xanthocyparis, then to Callitropsis and finally back to Cupressus.
In North America, yellow cedar is considered one of the highest quality woody plants.
