Description
The American walnut, botanically correct black walnut, is native to the eastern US, from Massachusetts to Florida, west to Texas and Minnesota. It was imported to Europe in the 17th century and is grown in parks and castle gardens. The wood is very decorative, the heartwood is brown to purplish, the sapwood is white to yellow-gray. The fibers are mostly straight, sometimes irregular with a fine to medium texture and a slight natural sheen.
Properties
The wood is hard, medium weight and durable. It has good dimensional stability, strength and impact resistance, dries well and tends to be stable.
Machining
It is easy to process, it cuts well, there is minimal chipping of the fibers when planing, it is good for turning, grinding and gluing. The wood is also suitable for bending. The smooth and fine surface of the walnut makes it possible to create perfect finishes.
