The name mahogany is used to denote a number of different, often unrelated woods with similar appearance and properties.
Cuban mahogany Swietenia mahoganii, the so-called true mahogany, was the most popular furniture and paneling wood in the world in the last two centuries, but today it is very rare.
Currently, the most commercially used species is Swietenia macrophylla, also known as Honduran mahogany. Its homeland is mainly the Atlantic coast of Central and South America. It is found in Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.
