Description

Panga panga is a dark and durable wood from East Africa, found in southern Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The core wood is brown, with dark brown stripes, the white wood is white to yellowish. The fibers are straight, with large pores, medium to coarse structure and natural luster. Yellow resin deposits may be present in the pores. Panga panga is closely related to wenge, they are of the same genus Millettia. Their color, appearance and properties are very similar, there can be confusion. Panga panga is usually a bit lighter as a rule.

Properties

Panga panga wood is a hard, tough wood, resistant to wood-destroying fungi and insects. It is usually stable after drying. It is popular for its dark color and unmistakable appearance. It resembles wenge wood and is often used as a substitute.

Processing

Cutting and planing is more demanding, the wood puts more resistance, the tools dull faster. When connecting nails or screws, it is necessary to pre-drill the holes. It turns and grinds well. It has larger pores in which there may be resin deposits, so gluing and surface treatment may be more difficult.
